Installing Cabinets Yourself Can be a Huge Savings
One way to save money when building a new home is to install cabinets in non-essential areas yourself. The kitchen cabinets are required to pass inspection, but some rooms can be left open and you could put in your own cabinets once you move in. These areas include the butler’s pantry, laundry room and mudroom, if your plan has these areas.
We decided to have cabinets placed in the butler’s pantry so that they would match the kitchen, but we did not put anything installed in the mudroom and the laundry room. Before we signed our contract with Adair Homes we had them price out the cost of doing the mudroom, and it would have been over $2,000 to have cabinets and drop zone area.
I was able to do this room for a couple of hundred dollars, at that cost of my time. We were able to get our cabinets from home depot at a fraction of the cost of what they would have been.
The mud room has been great area to have, and helps keep the kitchen island cleared off.
