Landscaping for an Adair Homes

If you decide to build a home with Adair Homes there are many opportunities to put in sweat equity to your new house. One of those areas is in the landscaping. Depending on the land that you build you might not have much landscaping to do, or you might have a lot to do.

Before you decide on building; it’s a good idea to go to the jurisdiction and ask if there are any landscaping requirements, so you can budget appropriately. Unfortunately the jurisdictions won’t always give you a straight answer and that’s where it is important to have contingency funds available for when (not if) you go over budget.

We were surprised by needing to install a rain garden after going to the city early on in the process and being told that we would not need to. It left us scrambling at the end to get it completed before getting our certificate of occupancy. Some places might require grass to be placed or other requirements.

We had planned to put in irrigation and grass once we were in the house. Our house was completed in the middle of winter, so it was not the best time to plant new grass. After the snow and rain we had in February and March we had to let the ground dry out before we could start working it. If the soil is too wet the dirt becomes compact and not a good growing medium.

Once we able to start working the soil we did some of the rough grading ourselves before having a landscape company come in to install the irrigation and grass. Once the irrigation was installed the next step was to put a layer of top soil down where the grass was going to go. The final step was to rake in the seeds and create the final grade.
It’s been about a week since the seed was planted and we already have a lawn sprouting up.

I’ve also been working on putting up a fence on the sides of our house. I have one section completed and hope to work on the other side this weekend.

The never ending list of weekend projects continues to grow, but hopefully we can get much of the outdoor projects done this summer.
