Day 130 – Cabinet Installation and Finish Work for New Home
A little follow up on last week’s post, we finally heard back from Adair Homes about the cabinet situation. After I sent an email to the customer care team, we quickly received an email from the sales agent about the cost of re-painting the cabinets; and they are willing to cover the full cost of re-painting the cabinets. Good news! And a real positive step to repairing an unfortunate situation.
This past Monday we went to the Creswell sales center and had them pull out all of our finish choices. They looked at the order and there were no questions as to which cabinet color the order referred. We were thinking that the color *might* not be that big of a deal, but after putting it next to all of the other finishes, it clearly shows the brighter white cabinet color matches best.
It’s not that the dove white cabinets are bad, the problem was that we picked out other finishes based on the brighter white cabinets. Our ceiling color is a brighter white already. The tile backsplash that was ordered is a bright white. The trim has not been painted yet, but we were planning on doing the same white as the ceiling. By changing the color of the cabinets it creates a snowball effect where all of the other finishes need to be changed to match. We had been waiting for Adair Homes to come up with a resolution and re-painting the cabinets seemed like the only option as the cabinets were installed this week.
On a brighter note, the cabinets in the bathrooms and the kitchen island are correct! The finish carpenter has been working this week to get the interior doors and cabinets installed. They also worked on the open railing for the stairs. It’s all starting to come together really nice.
Another hurdle this week is that the kitchen island was installed left justified – it seems to be aligned with the edge of the cabinets that are on the wall. Unfortunately, this is how they were on the plans. We talked to the finish carpenter and he said that he was not given a measurement on the plans, so just went off of how it looked. The electrician centered the recessed lights and the chandelier in the nook to where the stove and hood will go, so now the island looks a little off center, as will the pendant lights above the island.
The finish carpenter said he could move it and that it was about five inches off. I called our site superintendent about this, and initially he thought it could get fixed; but after he talked to the sub-contractor, he said that the island could not be moved at this time.
After contacting the customer care team Friday morning, we quickly got an email from the sales team and also received a phone call and an email back from the customer care team. They offered to fully pay for the painting of the cabinets, as well as reposition the island (no charge). Of course we were disappointed with the the initial response, but are happy with the response and willingness to fix the problem from the customer care team.

We appreciate being highlighted by them in spite of issues with the customer service. When building a new home, things are rarely going to go perfectly as planned. This is the case no matter the builder, but how they respond when things go wrong really shows what they are about. In these last few days, we have received some truly thoughtful consideration and appreciate all the efforts to rectify what has gone wrong. Positive steps moving forward towards solutions by Adair Homes.

On the outside of the house, the porch is supposed to get set up and ready with plans to pour concrete the following week. Our excavator was getting the porch set up on Friday. He said the concrete guy will be out next week to set up the forms and we are scheduled to pour the concrete on December 10th.
If the weather stays how it is shown in the forecast, we’re hoping that the painters will be able to paint the exterior next week!
Never a dull moment when building a new home; there are always going to be a lot of decisions to be made and being able to work out the details with your builder is going to make things easier. It’s been a frustrating week waiting for a response from Adair Homes, but we’re happy for a resolution!
