Day 80 of Adair Homes Construction: Finishing the Exterior of Home and Painting Decisions
This week the final touches on the exterior were completed. We had a lot of rain last weekend and the roof was on just in time. Monday the siders were out working in the rain for most of the day finish their work.
Tuesday they finished by wrapping the posts on the front porch, which really changed the look of the front. The last thing that needed to be completed on the exterior was the installation of the gutters, which happened yesterday. We need the utilities connected and that will be the end of Phase I of construction.
Changes in ducting and gas line
There were a few things that needed to be changed with the interior utilities. The gas lines were installed last week, but were placed under the house. Apparently, the city won’t crawl under the house to do the gas inspection so it was changed from going under the house to above.
Another issue that we had was that the HVAC installers put ducting in the wrong place going from the living room to the kitchen. They had already created the holes in the joists for this, so there may be structural issues with the joists now. Our site superintendent was out yesterday with a guy from the joist company and they are having engineers look at it to see what the fix is going to be. They might have to reinforce it with more joists or they might be able to patch the holes. We will know more once they hear back from the engineers.
Choosing Exterior Colors for New Home Construction
With the exterior finished up, painting is coming up. We had been keeping an eye out on possible gray colors that we liked but haven’t really looked at it in depth. This week we really started to take a dive into color options. We met with the designer at Sherwin-Williams and looked at a few color options. We were thinking a medium gray color that was more on the warm side. Going into the meeting I was thinking something like Dovetail Gray, but we weren’t sure if that was going to be too dark. We also liked Dorian Gray.
We ended up leaving the meeting with a sample of Pewter Tankard for the exterior body, Eider White for the trim and possibly Iron Ore for the front door. Pewter Tankard had not been a color that we looked at before, but we really like the combination of the color cards.
I went by the house to get a couple pieces of leftover siding and painted them with the sample of the Pewter Tankard by Sherwin-Williams. It looks like a good gray color, but maybe a little lighter than we were originally thinking?
More to Come for Eugene, Oregon New Home
Next, week was set aside for our excavator to come back to trench the utilities, install rain drains, dig out our rain garden and back fill around the house. This is part of the owner’s responsibilities, as Adair Homes does not do this portion. I gave him notice a few weeks ago that we were going to need him and he said that he should be available.
I talked to him again last night and he said that he is not going to be able to make it out Monday. Its a little disappointing as he had pushed us off already once this summer when we had a delay from the framers, otherwise we would have been able to do some of this during that time. He said he might have someone available that can come out so, I’m really hoping we don’t have delays from him as that would mess up things going forward.
We also have our Pre-Drywall Meeting with Adair Homes scheduled next week. During this meeting we will discuss Phase II of construction, which starts with insulation and ends with move-in.
With the house looking completed from the exterior, we’re on to all the fun stuff in the interior. Hope you continue to follow along as the house gets completed!
